Microsoft 365 apps on your phone

What is free, what needs a subscription, and where to get them.

Good news: on a phone or tablet, the apps you need for email are free. The licence question really only affects Windows and Mac.
  1. Open the Play Store and search for Microsoft Outlook. Install it. It is free and works with every plan, including Business Basic.
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft 365 email address. See the Microsoft 365 email guides on this site.
  3. Word, Excel and PowerPoint are also free to install. On a small screen you can view and edit documents at no cost.
  4. On a larger tablet, or to unlock the full editing features, those three apps ask for a Microsoft 365 subscription. Any plan that includes the desktop apps covers this.
  5. Install Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft Teams as well if your workplace uses them. See the OneDrive & Teams guides on this site.
If you only ever read email on your phone and in a browser, Business Basic on its own is genuinely enough and you do not need to buy anything else.
Install Microsoft Authenticator too. See the Multi-factor authentication guides on this site.
